Sexuality

Sexuality is a way that people describe their attraction to other people; People are usually attracted to people of the same sexuality. Sexuality is usually defined in three categories;

  • Heterosexual-straight-attracted to people of the opposite gender
  • Bisexual-attracted to people of both genders
  • Homosexual/gay/lesbian-attracted to people of same gender

Although we mention attracted it means more than sexual attraction it is about who you want to build a loving, committed stable relationship with. This is because sexuality is a combination of emotional, romantic and sexual attraction to people.

You do not have to label yourself if you do not want to, this is a personal decision. Sexuality is a personal subject just because you may look at people of the same sex does not mean that you are gay, this will become more apparent as you mature, get older and experience life.

There is no wrong or right sexuality; approximately 8% of people are gay or lesbian so there are more heterosexuals than homosexuals. This does not mean that either one is right or wrong or that heterosexual is normal because it is more common.

If you have decided upon your sexuality it does not mean that you have to have sex just because you have decided upon your sexuality and it does not mean that you are ready for sex or need to have sex with everyone of the same sexuality. This does not mean that you have to socialise with people of the same sexuality, if you do it is good to join a group such as Just b u in Basildon (01268 2844130) which is a social group for young men who may be gay or bisexual.

Coming out refers to making a decision to tell your close friends and family about your sexuality, this is a very important time in your life and you should seek advice first from a professional such as a Community Contraception Service nurse or on-line at www.queeryouth.org.uk
